Idabel’s Mercades Lopez – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Weyerhaeuser

By Payton Moody
Meet Mercades Lopez, a dedicated student-athlete from Idabel High School, whose passion for softball shines through in every aspect of her life.

When asked about her favorite coach, Lopez doesn’t hesitate to mention her parents. “They push me and make me reach my full potential,” she said.

In her softball journey, Lopez found a role model and competitor in her sister. “We always competed, and she taught me everything I know,” Lopez said.

Lopez singles out Mrs. Hamilton as her favorite teacher, highlighting the impact she’s had on her academic and personal growth. “She always knows about everything I do in sports, and she is a big supporter,” Lopez said. “She also let me know sports isn’t everything and that I have to figure out my college route.”

To prepare for the upcoming season, Lopez has been putting in the work by spending extra time in the batting cages. “I also will have to pitch next year, so I will pitch a lot and get better.”

One of the profound lessons Lopez has learned from softball is gratitude. “Softball has taught me to always be grateful for what you have,” she said. “You don’t know when it’s going to end or if you can ever do it again.”

Lopez’s favorite softball memory is playing alongside her sister. “She is my role model and taught me everything, even though I think I’m better,” Lopez said with a laugh.

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Lopez and her teammates have set ambitious goals. Their primary objective is to be the first Idabel softball team to make it to the state championships in a long time. “It’s been too long since Idabel has been successful; we have changed that and will continue to do so.”

Beyond high school, Lopez has big plans. She intends to go to college and continue playing softball, taking her passion for the sport to the next level.

Mercades Lopez is not just a softball player; she’s a testament to the power of family, mentorship and setting ambitious goals.
