Idabel’s Titus Baker – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Smith Equipment, LLC

Idabel’s Titus Baker

Titus Baker knows competition well.

Whether he’s lining up on the football field, battling for position on the basketball court or stepping onto the baseball diamond, the Idabel High School junior has built his reputation around toughness, effort and refusing to back down. But some of the most meaningful growth in Baker’s life has happened beyond the scoreboard.

For Baker, one of the most memorable experiences of his life came through a workshop called BASIC, an experience he says left a lasting impact on him.

“The entire workshop is full of memories,” Baker said. “I can’t just say one. Meeting all of the people there was the best thing ever.”

That experience broadened his perspective and reinforced something sports had already been teaching him for years — growth often happens when challenges feel uncomfortable.

Playing three sports has shaped Baker’s mindset in powerful ways. Football, basketball and baseball have each demanded discipline and resilience, but the biggest lesson has been learning how to keep going when circumstances get difficult.

“Sports taught me how to persevere and never give up when times get tough,” Baker said.

That mentality has become central to who he is, not only as an athlete but as a teammate and leader. Baker understands that adversity is unavoidable, but surrender is always a choice.

One coach in particular helped cement that mindset.

Baker points to coach Braxton Kincade as one of the most influential people in his education. After Baker’s freshman season, nearly the entire coaching staff moved on to another school. Kincade stayed.

That decision left a lasting impression.

Instead of walking away during a difficult transition, Kincade remained committed to his players, modeling what leadership looks like when things become uncertain.

“He didn’t quit on us,” Baker said. “He’s one of the best role models I’ve ever had and an even better leader.”

That same competitive fire shows up in Baker’s relationship with teammate Bryce Bee. The two have pushed each other since eighth grade, constantly competing in drills and one-on-one matchups. What began as competition evolved into mutual respect.

Their daily battles have sharpened both players, and with the two expected to line up beside each other on the defensive line, that bond could become a major strength for Idabel.

Baker also credits leadership opportunities outside athletics for shaping him. Through student council, he has learned how to communicate, collaborate and lead in different settings — skills that translate directly into team sports.

More than anyone, Baker credits his mother for making his journey possible. Her constant support and example gave him something every young athlete needs: someone to look up to.

“She’s been pushing me since I was in diapers,” Baker said. “She’s been with me all my life, and gave me an example to look up to”

That foundation of perseverance, loyalty and belief continues to drive Baker forward.
