Idabel’s Cole Grant Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Mandy Knowles, Shelter Insurance

An accomplished three-sport athlete, Idabel graduating senior Cole Grant looks to the next chapter of his life.

VYPE: How did your experience growing up as the youngest shape your work ethic and values?

Cole Grant: I came from a working family, so that’s all I know. Growing up, I saw both of my parents get up and go to work every day and watching my grandpa work his farm until he was in his 70s. Seeing that kind of stuck with me. They never let me quit anything when things got hard and I’m truly grateful for that. Also, growing up in a Christian and church-going household helped shape me into who I am today. I learned at a young age that God is a provider and a savior. I just want to show praise to Him.

VYPE: Why do you think you fell in love with the sport of basketball so easily?

CG: I couldn’t tell you why I fell in love with it. I just know I’ll always wish I could play a little more. I watched a basketball movie one time and it said “what’s there not to love, basketball is the most reliable thing in the world. it don’t complain, it don’t ask any questions, if you bounce it, it comes right back up.” So, what is there not to love about basketball?

VYPE: In basketball, track or golf — which opponent or opponents did you most enjoy beating?

CG: Honestly, I would say beating Valliant in basketball this year. One of my close friends, Rustin Coffey, played for them, and beating them was a little revenge for all the times he beat me in middle school. That game’s atmosphere was unforgettable. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that game. Winning my last rivalry game against Broken Bow was pretty cool too, though!

VYPE: What are your future plans?

CG: My future plans consist of attending OSUIT [Institute of Technology] in Okmulgee and going into construction management. I think I also want to be a basketball coach later on in my life.
