One of the best skills that athletes can attain is the ability to adapt. For Idabel senior Sami Jobe, while an experienced softball player, this fall she will be facing a new challenge, and it’s one she’s looking forward to. Jobe is a multi-sport athlete who plays softball, basketball, runs track, and is on the Idabel High School dance team. Jobe often plays second base for the Warriors, however, this year she’ll be tasked with taking on a bigger role behind the dish.
“This is my first year to catch at the high school level,” Jobe said. “I’ve been getting as many reps as possible to improve my play. The position is challenging, but I enjoy seeing the game from behind the plate.”
While Jobe will be adapting to her new defensive position, she is looking forward to the opportunity. In the batter’s box Jobe reads pitchers well knowing when to lay down a bunt and is an excellent base runner on offense.
Outside of athletics Jobe has had some personal adversity to overcome, but remains positive and serves as an inspiration to others.
“I want to be seen as a leader that has a positive influence on and off the field. I was diagnosed with lupus last year and that has been challenging,” Jobe said. “I’ve had many days that it was hard to get out of bed, but I know that if I show others what it means to be mentally and physically tough and maintain a positive attitude that it may help them through a difficult situation.”
Looking toward this fall Jobe has a few personal and team goals in mind.
“I hope that our team makes a run in the playoffs and plays up to our ability. As an individual, I just want to contribute to my team and make us better as a whole,” Jobe said.
Jobe appreciates the relationships she has formed through athletics in Idabel and considers her teammates to be like a second family. One person she admires is Jaylee Lopez.
“Not only is she one of the best athletes I have ever seen, she is an even better person,” Jobe said. “She puts in work every day and never gives up.”
Outside of athletics Jobe is also a member of the National Honor Society, student council, a regular at FBC in Idabel, and was chosen for RYLA, Girls State, and the Oklahoma Youth Tour in 2022. After high school Jobe wants to play basketball in college and pursue a career in nursing.
