Finding a job and getting his own car have given Jahmauri McElroy two reasons to feel proud of his senior year. The Idabel High School athlete counts those milestones alongside the progress he has made in football and powerlifting.

McElroy plays outside linebacker, wide receiver and defensive end for Idabel. He also competes in track and field and powerlifting. Football has taught him to lead instead of following others. During a game, he said, “communication is key to everything.”

That approach shapes his friendship with Davion Byrd. McElroy describes his teammate as another brother, though neither lets their closeness soften the competition between them.

“We don’t go easy on each other during drills,” McElroy said.

They encourage each other after good plays and call out mistakes when something needs fixing. McElroy values having someone who will celebrate with him and hold him accountable in the same practice.

He finds similar encouragement at school from Mrs. Tatum and Mrs. Amber. McElroy said both teachers notice when students are having a hard day and try to lift their spirits. Their support has stayed with him as he has worked to become more confident on the field.

At home, his mother, Jacqueline McElroy, has urged him to chase his dreams without letting criticism discourage him.

“As long as I know I can do it then that’s all that matters,” McElroy said.

He also credits his father, Mack Dixon; his younger sister, Londyn Brown; and his grandmother, Charlesetta McElroy, for pushing him forward.

The people closest to him are what McElroy loves most about Idabel. His family and friends are here, and the school has been part of his life as he has grown up. After football season, he hopes to join a few school clubs and find another way to take part.

He takes pride in the job and the car. At practice, he takes pride in something he and Byrd keep working on together: getting the next play right.
