Idabel’s Cassidy Pondexter – Track Spotlight – Presented by Sherrill’s Pharmacy

Cassidy Pondexter’s love for track started long before he ever stepped onto a high school track. “I’m 16 years old, and I’m a sophomore at Idabel High School,” Pondexter shared. “I’ve always wanted to run track since I was a little boy. Running track was a dream. I started running track during middle school, and ever since, I knew track was the sport that I love the most.”

Influences have shaped his journey and drive. “My sister Tae’Janna, my mom, my granny, my siblings, and my coaches have all inspired me,” he said. Their encouragement continues to push him to be his best, both on and off the track.

This season, Pondexter is not only focused on his personal goals but also appreciates the chemistry of his team. “This year, the team’s chemistry has been great. Everyone is working well together, communicating effectively, and supporting each other both on and off the field,” he said.

As a mid-distance runner, Pondexter takes his preparation seriously. “I stretch very well and run both short and long distances,” he explained. His goals for the season are clear and ambitious. “To beat my time and win state and become a state champion. To work hard and put a lot of effort into everything I do.”

Training is intense and consistent. “A typical week of training is a balance of strength, endurance, agility, and recovery,” Pondexter shared. But the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “Beating my time has been tough. I kept practicing and believed in myself. I told myself I can do it.”

Looking ahead, Pondexter has big dreams. “I see myself working on being in the Olympics, getting a good job and a good house, and focusing on sports and my family.”

Community support means the world to him. “It boosts morale and provides players with a sense of pride and motivation. The support leads me to improve my performance as a player to feel valued and driven to succeed, not just for myself, but for my supporters as well.”

His advice to younger athletes is simple: “Stay dedicated and work hard, focus on improving your skills through consistent practice, listen to your coaches, and maintain a positive attitude.”

After graduation, Pondexter plans to attend college and earn a bachelor’s degree, with hopes of continuing his athletic career.
